The HP DV9000 series of laptops provide an experience centered around entertainment, whether it is viewing photos, listening to music, or watching your favorite movies. In order to store all of this multimedia, you need a large hard drive. If you need a larger hard drive in your DV9000 laptop, or if your current drive is failing, you can replace the drive yourself with a few easy steps. The laptop supports two hard drives, so you can replace one or both. It is a good idea to back up your important files to a disc or a thumb drive before you replace your hard drive.

1. Turn off the laptop and disconnect all cables, including the power cable.

2. Close the lid and flip the laptop over so that the front is facing you. Remove the battery by sliding the battery switch to the side and lifting the battery up and out of its compartment.

3. Locate the two hard drive covers on either side of the laptop at the bottom. Remove the two phillips screws holding each cover into place, then lift and remove the cover.

4. Grip the plastic tab and pull the drive out of its slot. Notice how the connector automatically disconnects.

5. Remove the four phillips screws holding the hard drive inside the metal bracket and remove the drive from the bracket.

6. Place the new drive inside the bracket and insert the four screws to secure it into place.

7. Slide the drive and the bracket into the hard drive compartment so that the connector automatically connects. Repeat the process with the second drive if necessary.

8. Replace the hard drive covers and screws, reinstall the battery, and reconnect all cables. You may need to reinstall the operating system if you replaced your system drive.

Boot up your computer to test that it is working and properly recognizes the new drive. If the drive is recognized, you have successfully completed the upgrade.

Before making repairs on HP laptop hard drives, it is always wise to consult the user’s manual or the HP support website. Another important precaution, for the replacement of HP notebook hard drives, is to be sure that the laptop is powered off and the battery is removed. Also, discharge any power that may have been retained in the device, along with any static electricity that may have been accumulated. Many professionals choose to wear an anti-static wristband, to prevent from damaging the device during maintenance procedures.

The next step in notebook hard drive replacement for HP, is to loosen the two Phillips-head screws securing the hard drive cover to the bottom of the notebook. With a flat-edged tool, lift the inside edge of the HP laptop hard drive cover, and remove the unit. Remove the two additional Phillips-head screws that secure the hard drive to the HP laptop enclosure.

Then, before the replacement of the notebook hard drive for HP devices, slide the hard disk drive toward the outside edge of the enclosure, and disconnect the hard drive from the system board connector. HP laptop hard drives should be carefully slid out of the enclosure, and placed in a static dissipative package. After the unit is removed, the installation of the replacement notebook hard drive for HP devices can be performed.

New HP laptop hard drives should be supplied in its own, static-free packaging, and ready for installation. To insert the new hard drive, push the unit toward the inside of the enclosure until the connector is seated properly. Replace the two Phillips-head screws that secure HP hard drives to the base enclosure. Also replace the hard disk cover, onto the enclosure, and snap the outside edges into position. Once the screws are replaced, the battery can be re-inserted, and the notebook hard drive replacement for an HP device is complete.
